About Us Like so many Baby Boomers we have focused the last 30 years + of our life on our education and our careers. We decided that there has to be something more.  That something has been Hawk Hill. At this time in our life we have had the opportunity to dedicate 100% of our time to the farm, our horses, our sheep and our other animals. That may change in the future but for now we will enjoy every minute. Bob and I came to farming through different paths.  First lets start with me - Laurie Maus.  My father's family have been farming in North America for over 260 years.  I was the first generation that was not born on a farm but I spent many weekends and holidays on my Grandfather's beef operation and later on my brother's dairy farm.  I showed dairy cattle in 4H and started buying, showing, breeding and selling dairy cattle when I was 16 years old. I was nearly 30 before I sold the last of my beloved Ayrshires.    By the way scratch the surface and you still have a cattle person.   However my education (a Master's degree in biology) and my career in environmental health research and regulation sidelined my dream of having a farm of my own.  I raised chickens for years on rented farms to keep the dream alive. In 1997, Hawk Hill became a dream realized. Bob also had a dream to live in the country and have a few animals.  He followed a similar path of education (a Master's in Mechanical Engineering) and career ( in the pulp and paper industry). He also raised chickens and a few goats on his small property in Quebec. He now can rebuild and run farm machinery with the best of them. Sure it would have been easier to start into farming if you knocked 20 or 30 years off our respective ages but we can still throw bales as well as most 20 year olds.  ....A few sore muscles are better than neglecting a dream.   Showcase Greta's Lottie Ayrshire All- Canadian nominee Bob with Canadian Filly Hawk Hill Lucan Rhapsody Our Vision for Hawk Hill Hawk Hill Farm is a family-run livestock operation producing  top quality breeding stock and meat animals known for exceptional flavour and tenderness.   We achieve this goal while respecting the environment and animal welfare including the preservation of heritage breeds without losing the ability to be financially stable. We strive to be the producer of choice in Eastern Ontario.  Being a knowledge-based organization, we work towards continuous improvement through research and training. We also are committed to sharing our knowledge with others. Our primary goal is to meet our customers' needs. In keeping with our vision, we support the following organizations. Future Plans Improvements and maintenance are ongoing activities on any farm and this one is no exception.  We have fenced pastures, built stalls and pens, built pasture shelters, repaired, painted...  and did I mention fencing. In the future we plan to expand our sheep pens, improve drainage, modify the forage mix and start to produce our own small grains and straw.  And did I mention, we are planning to do more....what else.... fencing. Our chickens will be raised in pasture pens starting in 2011 and we will be expanding our poultry production as we downsize our beef production. Our horses will be used for both pleasure and hopefully work. Our flock will be registered in the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency Flock Health program, be DNA tested for scrapie resistance and we will consider formalizing our production data collection in the Sheep Flock Improvement Program. And if we run out of ideas for future plans there is always more fencing. All  About Us and our Vision for the Farm
